2025 Spring Meeting

HelmSoc held our 733rd meeting on March 29, 2024 at George Mason University’s Potomac Science Center in Woodbridge, Virginia! A zoom link was provided for folks who couldn’t make the meeting in person but wanted to watch the talks. It was a fantastic meeting, with many new faces and wonderful talks! Thanks so much to Katrina Lohan and Amy Fowler for organizing the meeting!

The Judith Humprey Shaw Undergraduate Awards for best presentations went to:

Jessica Nimar won third place for her poster A new species of Rhinebothrium from the white-edge freshwater whipray (Fluvitrygon signifer) from Borneo.

Mara Taylor won second place for her oral presentation Characterizing the parasite communities of native and invasive snails in central Florida.

Kiersten Jewell won first place for her poster Seasonal and coinfection patterns in parasite prevalence of an estuarine crab host.

The Stirewalt-Lincicome Student Awards went to:

Patricia Torres won third place for her talk Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding tick-borne disease prevention among Native American communities: insights and ongoing research.

Linda Djune-Yemeli won second place for her talk Assessing the relationship between microfilariae dynamics and loa loa cross-reactive antigens.

Garrett Maggio won first place (and best presentation overall) for his talk Evidence of host ecology within the population genetic structure of a unique parasitic trematode.

HelmSoc also gave out 10 student travel grants. Congratulations to all of the students on their excellent presentations!

2024 Fall Meeting

The 732nd meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington was an Anniversary Dinner meeting, where we celebrated the contributions of Dr. Autumn Smith-Herron! We met on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, Maryland.

2024 Spring Meeting

The 731st meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington was held in collaboration with the Southeastern Society of Parasitologists in Lexington, Virginia on April 18-20, 2024.

2023 Fall Meeting

The 730th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington was an Anniversary Award Dinner meeting, celebrating Dr. Florian Reyda's many contributions to the society and our journal! We met on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023 at the Pirates Cove Restaurant in Galesville, MD.

2023 Spring Meeting

The 729th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington was held in a hybrid format at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD on April 30, 2022. Thanks to everyone who attended and presented!

2022 Fall Meeting

The 728th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington, our Anniversary Dinner meeting was on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3:00 at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, Maryland. The Anniversary Award winner was Dr. Ashleigh Smythe.

2022 Spring Meeting

The 727th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington took place on April 30, 2022 (10 am EST). We held the meeting both in person at Shenandoah University and using ZOOM with synchronous (live) talks. This format allowed more members to present their work to the larger group and gain feedback for their amazing research. We requested that all virtual presenters upload a video of their presentation to ensure that for those wishing to present their work ‘live’, we have a backup of the talk ready to play if issues with connectivity or ZOOM, etc. arise. There was a registration fee of $15 for student members $30 for regular members. The in person sessions were held at Shenandoah University and the virtual presentations were conducted using ZOOM with synchronous (live) talks. Thank you to everyone that presented and attended.

2021 Fall Meeting

The 726th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington was on November 20, 2021 (10 am EST). This meeting was held virtually using Zoom and we had opportunities for both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (pre-recorded) presentations. There was no registration fee, but the meeting was only be open to members. Thank you to everyone that presented and attended.

2021 Spring Meeting

We held our second ever virtual Zoom meeting for the 725th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington on May 1, 2021 at 10 am (EST) with both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (pre-recorded) talks. All talks were 12mins with 3mins for Q&A. Executive meeting was held via Zoom on April 30th 4-6pm.

2020 Fall Meeting

We held our first ever virtual Zoom meeting for the 724th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington on November 14, 2020 at 10 am (EST) with both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (pre-recorded) talks. Asynchronous talks were viewable during the meeting and for three days post-meeting. This format allowed more members to present their work to the larger group and gain feedback for their amazing research. All talks were 12mins with 3mins for Q&A.

2020 Spring Meeting

The 723rd meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington was cancelled on account of COVID-19. Anyone who had already registered was fully refunded.

2019 Fall Meeting

The 722nd meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington, our Anniversary Dinner meeting was held on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2:00pm at Old Stein Inn in Edgewater, Maryland. Dr. Janine Caira from the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at UConn was the recipient of our Anniversary Award

2019 Spring Meeting

The 721st meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington, our Spring meeting, was held at Shenandoah University on Saturday April 6th 2019 hosted by Dr. Michael Zimmermann. Thanks to everyone for a hugely successful meeting. We had some great student talks at our 721st meeting at Shenandoah University. For our Stirewalt-Lincicome Student Award for graduate student presentations, John Sanders won first place, and Brandi Griffith was runner-up. For our Judith Humphrey Shaw Undergraduate Award, Greg Lutz won first place, Candace Ashworth runner-up, and Nicole Shannon Honorable Mention

2018 Fall Meeting

The 720th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington, our Anniversary Award Dinner, was held Saturday Nov 3 at AIDA Bistro in Columbia, MD. The Executive Committee met from 2:30-4pm and the regular meeting began at 4pm with "lightning talks" and drinks/appetizers until dinner at 6pm. The Anniversary Award presentation was made to Dr. Vincent Connors

2018 Spring Meeting

The 719th Meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington was held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Penn State York in York, PA. Dr. Anne Vardo-Zalik was the host. The meeting had a morning session of talks and afternoon discussion as well as a poster session. The Executive Committee meeting was the evening of April 13th

2017 Fall Meeting

The 718th meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington, our Anniversary Award Dinner, was on Saturday, November 18 at the Fisherman's Inn on Kent Island, MD. The Executive Committee meeting was from 2:30-4:00pm followed by the regular meeting at 4:00pm with "lightning talks" and conversation until dinner at 6:00pm, followed by the Anniversary Award presentation to Dr. Tamara J Cook.

2017 Spring Meeting

The very successful 2017 Spring Scientific Meeting of the Society (717th) was held on April 8th at Salisbury University, Salisbury, MD with Dr. Ann Barse serving as host

2016 Fall Meeting

The 2016 Anniversary Dinner Meeting (716th) was held on November 4th at the Fisherman's Inn and Crab Deck, Kent Island, MD. We are pleased to announce that William E. Moser was the recipient of the 2016 Anniversary Award

2016 Spring Meeting

The 2016 Spring Meeting (715th) was held at George Washington University, Washington, DC on April 22-23, 2016. The meeting kicked off with a reception followed by the keynote address by 2015 Nobel Laureate, Dr. William C. Campbell. The meeting continued on Saturday with oral presentations by scientists and students

2015 Fall Meeting

The 2015 Anniversary Dinner Meeting (714th) was held on October 23rd at the Big Fish Grille, Crofton, MD.
